Chile Invoice Template (Factura Electrónica Reference Layout)
A free reference layout that names what a Chilean factura electrónica shows: the issuer's RUT, razón social and giro, the document type and folio, the receiver's RUT and giro, the net amount, IVA at 19% and the total, and the timbre electrónico. Read this first: since 1 February 2018 every company in Chile must issue its facturas electronically under Ley 20.727. A factura is a documento tributario electrónico (DTE): an XML document signed with a digital certificate, using a folio authorised by the Servicio de Impuestos Internos (SII), and valid only once the SII has received it correctly. A file from this page, or a PDF from InvoiceQuickly, is not a DTE and cannot replace one. Use it to prepare data for the SII's free invoicing system or your provider, to brief an accountant, or as the layout for an invoice from a business outside Chile to a Chilean client. It downloads as an HTML file you can edit in a browser and print or save as PDF.

- Download the template. It opens as an editable HTML file in your browser.
- Replace each bracketed field with your details. Totals are not calculated for you, so check the arithmetic.
- Print it or save it as a PDF from your browser. InvoiceQuickly does not create or store this document type.
Recommended Payment Terms
Agree the payment term in your contract and show it on the factura, for example "Pago a 30 días". Chilean law also gives the receiver a short window to dispute a factura: under Ley 19.983 it is irrevocably accepted unless claimed within eight calendar days of receipt, and the SII's acceptance and claim register applies the same eight days. If the customer does not respond, the acuse de recibo is treated as given after those eight days, which matters if you later need to enforce payment.
Tax Information
Chile's IVA (Impuesto al Valor Agregado) rate is 19%, set by article 14 of the Ley sobre Impuesto a las Ventas y Servicios. Taxable sales go on a Factura Electrónica (code 33); sales that are exempt or not subject to IVA go on a Factura No Afecta o Exenta Electrónica (34); sales to consumers use a boleta electrónica (39, or 41 if exempt), mandatory since 2021; and adjustments use credit notes (61) and debit notes (56). Services qualified as exports by the National Customs Service are IVA-exempt and are documented with a Factura de Exportación (110). Independent professionals who are Chilean or resident in Chile issue a boleta de honorarios electrónica instead, with a 15.25% retention in 2026. InvoiceQuickly applies one tax percentage per invoice, copies a saved tax ID to new invoice PDFs but has no dedicated giro field, does not offer Chilean pesos (CLP) in its editor and cannot produce, sign or send a DTE.
Industry context (2026)
Chile completed its move to electronic invoicing on 1 February 2018, when the last group of companies under Ley 20.727 had to issue facturas electronically. Electronic boletas followed under Ley 21.210, mandatory from 1 January 2021 for electronic invoicers and from 1 March 2021 for everyone else. The SII published version 2.5 of its DTE format in February 2026. The retention on boletas de honorarios rises each year under Ley 21.133: 14.5% in 2025, 15.25% in 2026, 16% in 2027 and 17% in 2028. Worked example
Agencia Cordillera SpA in Santiago (an illustrative example) builds a website for a client company in Valparaíso for CLP 2,000,000 net. In the SII's free invoicing system it issues a Factura Electrónica (code 33) with its next authorised folio: both RUTs, razón social and giro, net CLP 2,000,000, IVA 19% CLP 380,000 and total CLP 2,380,000. The SII receives the XML, and the client has eight days to claim the factura before it is treated as accepted. Separately, a freelance designer resident in Chile who bills the agency CLP 1,000,000 issues a boleta de honorarios electrónica: the agency withholds 15.25% (CLP 152,500) and pays CLP 847,500. Neither document can be produced from this layout or from InvoiceQuickly; a PDF could serve only as a quote before the work.
Common mistakes to avoid
Sending a PDF instead of a DTE
Only DTEs received correctly by the SII are valid. A PDF invoice from a Chilean company leaves the client without a valid factura.
Abbreviating the giro or razón social
The SII's printed-sample rules require the razón social as registered and the giro without abbreviations.
Putting exempt sales on a code 33 factura
Sales that are exempt or not subject to IVA belong on a Factura No Afecta o Exenta Electrónica (code 34).
Using last year's honorarios retention
The retention changes every January under Ley 21.133. In 2026 it is 15.25%, not 14.5%.
Ignoring the eight-day claim window
If you receive a wrong factura, claim it within eight calendar days of receipt, or it is treated as irrevocably accepted.
Invoicing Tips
- 1Small business without invoicing software? The SII's free Sistema de Facturación Gratuito issues DTEs once you upload your digital certificate to sii.cl.
- 2Write the razón social exactly as registered and the giro in full, without abbreviations, as the SII's printed-sample manual requires.
- 3Check the timbre on every printed copy. A printed DTE must carry the PDF417 barcode, at least 2 x 5 cm.
- 4Independent professional resident in Chile? Issue a boleta de honorarios electrónica on sii.cl. In 2026 the retention is 15.25%: on a CLP 1,000,000 boleta, CLP 152,500 is withheld and CLP 847,500 is paid.
- 5Invoicing a Chilean client from outside Chile? A business outside Chile does not issue DTEs, and a non-resident cannot issue a boleta de honorarios, so send your own invoice and ask the client what its accountant needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use this template as a Chilean factura?
No. Ley 20.727 made electronic invoicing universal and mandatory, and since 1 February 2018 every company in Chile must issue facturas electronically. The SII treats as valid only DTEs it has received correctly. This layout and InvoiceQuickly PDFs are not DTEs.
What is a DTE in Chile?
A documento tributario electrónico is an XML document, such as a factura, boleta, credit note or dispatch guide, signed with a digital certificate and carrying a folio authorised by the SII through a Código de Autorización de Folios (CAF). It is sent to the SII, and its printed version carries the timbre electrónico as a PDF417 barcode.
What is the IVA rate in Chile?
19%, under article 14 of the IVA law. On a net sale of CLP 2,000,000 the IVA is CLP 380,000 and the factura total is CLP 2,380,000. Exempt sales go on a separate exempt factura (code 34).
What is a boleta de honorarios and what is the 2026 retention?
It is the electronic document independent professionals (Chilean nationals or foreigners resident in Chile with a suitable visa and start of activities) issue for their fees. Under Ley 21.133 the retention is 15.25% in 2026, rising to 16% in 2027 and 17% in 2028. Either the paying company withholds it or the issuer pays it monthly.
How long does a customer have to reject a factura in Chile?
Eight calendar days from receipt. Under Ley 19.983 and the SII's acceptance and claim register, a factura not claimed within that period is treated as irrevocably accepted.
Can InvoiceQuickly create a Chilean factura electrónica?
No. InvoiceQuickly creates English-language PDF invoices with one tax rate. It cannot obtain folios, sign XML or send documents to the SII, and it does not offer CLP in its editor. It suits a business outside Chile that invoices a Chilean client.
